SWIMMING:

On a hot August day a bracing dip anywhere in the Islands can feel fantastic, but here are a few pool locations and recommended saltwater swims:

Pools:

  • Poet's Cove in Bedwell Harbour has a very nice pool and hot-tub for marina guests with full shower facilities and poolside chairs.
  • Otter Bay Marina on North Pender Island has a nice swimming pool with a special "adult swim" hour late in the afternoon.  The marina staff help to keep the kids entertained during the adult swim.  There is also beach for swimming in the bay.
  • Ganges Marina on Saltspring Island has a rudimentary pool and hot tub on a floating dock.  It isn't Club Med but it's still a great way to cool down and lots of fun for the kids.

Saltwater:

Any bay that has less exchange of water during the tides will tend to warm up more.   Here are some examples:

  • Pirate's Cove is nice for a boatside swim, but refer to our cautions section regarding the entrance to this cove.
  • Montague Harbour seems to run a little warm too, probably because it is a largish area with modest depth.
  • Pacific Yachting Magazine listed the following "Gulf Island Swimming Holes":
    • Vesuvius Bay, Saltspring Island ("saltspring's warmest swimming hole")
    • Dionisio Point, Galiano Island ("sandy beach and clear warm waters")
    • Maple Bay, Vancouver island ("warm...private")
    • Annette Inlet, Prevost Island ("secure anchorage has some of the warmest swimming water")
    • Bennett Bay, Mayne Island  ("one of the best bathing beaches in the Southern Gulf Islands")
    • Tent Island ("clear green water...sandy shores")
    • Saturna Beach, Saturna Island ("clear emerald waters, clean quiet beach")
    • Preedy Harbour, Thetis Island  ("easy anchoring...beautiful beach...clear water")
    • Tod Inlet, Vancouver island  ("tops the list...perfect water...secure anchorage...beautiful surroundings)
